Pre-Clinical Stage
This stage of drug discovery assesses a compound’s safety, efficacy, and pharmacological profile before it can be tested in humans. Scientists first confirm that the drug engages its intended biological target (pharmacodynamics) and study how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and eliminates it (pharmacokinetics or ADME).
Toxicology studies in at least two animal species help define safe dosage levels and identify risks such as organ damage or carcinogenicity. Researchers also evaluate the drug’s effectiveness in animal models of disease to establish proof of concept.
